LUOMUS

The Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus studies nature. We protect and study the national collections in natural history. We make science accessible to the public. We work for a better world for the environment, people and our societies. We are a community of approximately 150 individuals operating under the University of Helsinki.

WHAT LUOMUS DOES AND WHAT WE ARE KNOWN FOR

The collections of the Finnish Museum of Natural History are among the world’s 50 most significant natural history collections, and its international networks are robust. The Luomus museums and gardens are some of Finland’s most popular public attractions. Luomus is a pioneer of citizen science and an independent institute of the University of Helsinki.

The core duties of Luomus are based on the Universities Act:

  1. Preservation of the national natural history collections
  2. Research and education relating to the collections
  3. Exhibition of the collections to the public as part of science and environmental education as well as the provision of other expert services
