Under the project, doctoral student Tuure Parviainen was able to go on a researcher exchange to familiarise himself with the rearing of black soldier flies at the University of Alicante, as well as other insect species potentially suited to mass rearing. In addition to feed for production animals, mass rearing also provides the opportunity to reuse agricultural by-products and food industry sidestreams as fly feed. Flies can even be harnessed to produce pollination services in greenhouses.
